(AUT/CH/D 2001, 103’, 35mm, director:
Martina Kudlácek, music: John Zorn.)
In the Mirror of Maya Deren is a cinematic portrait of
the legendary filmmaker and voodoo expert, Maya Deren. Born in
Kiev in 1917, Deren grew up in the USA, and became one of the
central figures of the American avant-garde in the 1940’s
and the 1950’s. Since her early death in 1961 Deren has
become a mystical character surrounded my many stories.
The documentary contains essayist images
from the locations of Deren’s life and stories from Haiti
and America told by Alexander Hammid, Katherine Dunham, Andre
Pierre, Stan Brakhage, Amos Vogel, Jonas Mekas, Judith Malina
and many others. These people relate the fascinating life story
of the pioneer and uncompromising art film activist. The documentary
gives a competent insight into the artist’s film work also
through the rare archive material including Deren’s lectures
to art students. Maya Deren’s music recordings from Haiti
and John Zorn’s soundtrack enrich this portrait of the unique
artist.
