Gustav Deutsch has taken images from old silent
films and arranged them into new wholes by subject. Deutsch shows
in a funny way what film was before sound. The series starts with
slapstick comedy. One actor after another rushes through doors,
climbs ladders, plays with food and chases the others. The early
cinema invented thousands of ways with which actors could slip
or stumble down. By using material found in the archives Deutsch
highlights the funny tricks, clichés and melodrama of silent
cinema but always with a sympathetic tenderness towards the old
films and their performers. The film soundtrack is by Christian
Fennesz, Werner Dafeldecker, Martin Siewert and Burkhard Stangl.
