The Avanto Helsinki Media Art Festival is Helsinkis annual
event of experimental music and moving image. The third
festival continues to build bridges between the past and the
present by showcasing some of the most exciting avant-garde
excavations
in sound and visual arts.
The opening night is an homage to Erkki
Kurenniemi, a Finnish pioneer of electronic music and
self-designed instruments. The programme includes a reconstruction
of the early interactive dance performance DEAL, using the unique
DIMI-O, and the premier of Mika
Taanila's documentary on Kurenniemi. To top it all
off, Pan sonic will perform
live using original instruments by Kurenniemi.
The headline live acts at Kiasma are Carl Michael
von Hausswolff (Swe), People Like Us (UK) and Semiconductor (UK).
The film programme includes retrospectives by Lis Rhodes
(UK) and Peter Tscherkassky (Aut), as well as screenings
of new films and videos by Gustav Deutsch (Aut), Ian
Helliwell (UK), Liisa Lounila (Fin), Naomi Uman
(USA) and many others. One highlight of the film programme will
be the screening at the Orion Theatre of 'The Holy Scrolls', a
12-hour-long film directed by the American experimental filmmaker
Bruce Baillie. This European premier will be accompanied by a
live soundtrack by Es,
Kemialliset Ystävät,
Mikko Maasalo, Tony
Ikonen, Mika Vainio and Ilpo
Väisänen.
Another highlight is Ondulation by [plumb],
a co-project of [The User] and Mikko Hynninen. In
this composition for water, sound and light, sound waves become
hydraulic waves and reach the viewer's eye as light waves.
The fun continues in clubs with live sets from
Pan sonic (Fin/Esp),
Russell Haswell (UK), Fe-mail
(Nor), F.R.U.I.T.S. (Rus),
Benzo (Rus), Anton
Nikkilä (Fin), Pink Twins (Fin), Alois
Huber (Aut), Pomassl
(Aut) and Sähkökvartetti
(Fin).
