Electric Forest: Fôret électrique

Avanto Festival presents two programmes of early Finnish avant-garde films in Paris on 22–23 May 2008. These programmes are based on the extensive Sähkömetsä screenings of the Avanto Festival 2006.

Programme 1 is dedicated entirely to the life’s work of two pioneering experimental film-makers, Eino Ruutsalo and Pasi "Sleeping" Myllymäki. Programme 2 features a series of formal experiments entirely unencumbered by the traditional rules of cinematic narrative. The programmer Mika Taanila (Avanto) will introduce the screenings in Paris on both evenings. Fôret électrique screenings are part of "Printemps (im)médiat!" in the 100% finlande event taking place in France this spring.

New American Cinema Revisited
26–30 March 2008

Sixteen programmes of films by The New American Cinema Group will be screened at Cinema Orion in Helsinki, Finland, from 26 to 30 March 2008. The programme features many key underground and avant-garde films of the 1960s by artists such as Stan Brakhage, Andy Warhol, Jonas Mekas, Jack Smith, Ken Jacobs, Ron Rice, Kenneth Anger, Stan Vanderbeek, Robert Breer, Shirley Clarke and so on. Most of the titles have not been seen in Finland since the legendary visit of the critic P. Adams Sitney in March 1968.

All titles are film prints, including brand new prints of Songs 1–22 and Songs 23–25 by Stan Brakhage.

The event is a collaboration of Avanto Festival and the National Audiovisual Archive of Finland (KAVA).
