ELECTRONIC SHOCK THERAPY

The audiences at Avanto have a unique opportunity to peer into the forgotten history of Finnish experimental film and video art. The Sähkömetsä (“Electric Forest”) screenings include underground films from the 1960s as well as frenzied 8 mm shorts from the punk years of the 1970s. Following Avanto’s Sähkömetsä series, the Central Art Archive of the Finnish National Gallery will soon publish the book Sähkömetsä, an ambitious step in the mapping of this previously uncharted territory.

Avanto’s five Sähkömetsä programmes consist of rare or entirely forgotten key works in the development of experimental filmmaking in Finland. The earliest stages of this development are illuminated in the programmes at Cinema Orion. Sähkömetsä 1 is dedicated to exploring early formal experiments that were unhindered by traditional rules of film narration, while Sähkömetsä 2 is a selection of disconcerting and controversial “underground films”. The first steps of Finnish video art are the focus of two programmes at Kiasma Theatre. The visionary works of Sähkömetsä 3 deal with the meeting of man and machine, one of the favourite themes of electronic art, while Sähkömetsä 4 is a primeval survey of some rarely screened gems of Finnish video art. Sähkömetsä 5 is dedicated in its entirety to the works of the Hämeenlinna-based artist Pasi “Sleeping” Myllymäki.
