Avanto Festival

Avanto Festival is Finland's annual event of non-conformist audiovisual art. The sixth Avanto will take place on November 18-20 2005 at the following venues in Helsinki: Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, The Finnish Film Archive's cinema theatre Orion, Gloria Club, UMO Jazz House, MUU Gallery, Gallery Huuto and Ateneum Art Museum.

News - updated 18.11.

Ticket sales for Avanto have got off to a brisk start. Blixa Bargeld’s concert at Kiasma has already been sold out, as has the first screening of Maddest Videos, a compilation of works by 6 to 14 year old Finnish kids. Tickets for other events are still available.

Those coming to the Avanto Nightclubs should note that at Gloria on Saturday Jandek will be the first artist to perform, starting at 10 pm, while at UMO Jazz House on Friday things kick off at 9.30 pm with the premiere of video piece Drum Zymphony by Seppo Renvall and Zape Leppänen.

Several new Avanto-related releases have come out recently and some will even see their release at the festival itself. The DVD Aika & aine is a compilation of Mika Taanila’s last five works, including his documentary The Future Is Not What It Used To Be of the Finnish inventor Erkki Kurenniemi, first screened at Avanto 2002. Also included is his film Optical Sound based on [The User]’s performance of their Symphony #2 for Dot Matrix Printers at Avanto 2001. Optical Sound can been seen at this year’s Avanto as part of Avantoscope 1.

The publisher Palladium Kirjat has put out the poetry record Runoja siis by Kari Aronpuro. Included is one of the highlights from Avanto 2001, the concert Aronpuro and Op:l Bastards gave at Gloria.

Ian Helliwell has been a frequent visitor at Avanto and now his musical output can be heard on the CD Workshop of the World on the Superbo label. The album consists of music and movie soundtracks.

Love Records has released a sequel to the Arctic Hysteria compilation from 2001. The double album More Arctic Hysteria / Son Of Arctic Hysteria presents Finnish experimental music from the 70s and 80s and includes such previous Avanto artists as Läjä Äijälä, Mika Vainio of Pan sonic, Pekka Airaksinen and Kari Peitsamo. Also included is Swissair, who’s film Hermafrodiitit will be screened at the Avanto Nightclub at Gloria on Saturday.

The Dutch-German Staalplaat label releases an album jointly with Avanto with commissioned compositions by Mika Vainio and Petri Kuljuntausta as well as short sound art pieces by ten different artists. Included are Avanto artists Blixa Bargeld, Merzbow and Alexei Borisov. Due to technical difficulties there has been a delay in pressing the vinyl only release and it will therefore not be ready for the festival.

The annual Avanto CD will this year be released on the final day of the event. Consisting of live recordings made on Friday and Saturday, it will be packed in covers made at an Avanto children’s workshop. The album is available in ten different covers as well as under ten different names! The CD will be put on sale at Kiasma on Sunday afternoon.

All aforementioned releases, as well as all releases sold at the Avanto web shop, will be available at special prices throughout the festival at Avanto sales points at Kiasma, UMO Jazz House and Gloria.
